~The Governess~ Jane Eyre meets Pride & Prejudice! Hot! Hot! Hot! Every word is like taking a bite out of Belgian chocolate – delicious and addictive! The characters are endearing (especially the feisty Carly and mysterious Lord Huntington), the tone is mellifluous and the imagery is vivid. Rich, aromatic writing! Here are a few of my favourite lines / descriptions so far: ‘Carly pulled a soft petal from the rose and smoothed it against her cheek,’ ‘...danced like prisms against the splashes.’ Carly is a cross between Jane Eyre and Elizabeth Bennett whilst Lord Huntington is a cross between Mr Rochester and Mr Darcy. I would absolutely love to be able to buy this as an audio book, close my eyes and let my imagination wander! I thoroughly enjoyed The Governess and have highly-starred and watchilsted it (until I find space on my bookshelf) A highly recommended read. Congratulations! Iman xxx Stark Silvercoin The Governess is an intense romance written in a unique and somewhat classic style, which totally differentiates itself from the “lets hop in bed” type of romance novels of today. The romance is there, but period details and deep characterization is more important to author Ellise C. Weaver. In fact, it is this very strong attention to detail that will thrill romance readers used to more slapdash or bodice-ripping tales. The storyline here and the way it’s told puts The Governess on the level of literary fiction. Yet, somehow the author keeps things light and fun at the same time. It’s quite a skill, and readers will really love it. All of the characters here are memorable, but especially Lady Carly Blakemore. She is sufficiently headstrong, which makes her standout in the period. In a lot of ways she reminded me of Fran Fine from The Nanny TV show, though a Victorian equivalent. Not only would The Governess be well received by critics and readers, but it makes for a perfect beginning book in a series. Weaver states in the final chapter to stay tuned for more adventures from the characters that we have come to love, and I think this is true. I for one want to see more of their stories, and written in this same style. A publisher who picks up volume one will be in for a treat, because they could pick up options on the other books as well, which I’m sure reader fans will be following. John Breeden II Janelle Stalder Why this book isn’t already published, I don’t know! For the last three days I have been completely enraptured with the story of Carly and Lord Huntington. The writing is amazingly refined. There wasn’t one point where I found anything awkward about the story, or the way you wrote it. The slow build of their relationship, and the added mystery in the background was done perfectly. I already told you, but the children were also amazing! I thought the relationship between Carly and the two youngsters was such a lovely addition to the story, and really added an endearing quality to the book. Carly is an amazing character. I love her vulnerability and strength. There were times where I got so frustrated with her confused feelings towards Lord Huntington, but then I’d remember she is very young. It was perfect. I honestly don’t have anything bad to say, which probably doesn’t help you lol but I can’t help it, I love it the way it is. I would definitely keep the part in the treasure hunt with the gifts to Johnathon. I loved the way his character came out of his shell, and you saw how much he healed because of Carly. I can’t wait for the second! When will it be ready? Congrats on such a wonderful story, and best of luck with it in the future. I feel good about letting my teenage girl read this, and know it will entertain and offer more thought provoking material than some of the today's reads and literary heroines. I have read the romances of today and honestly they have all been rather boring. But your's is something so much more...oh how to describe it...lovely, perhaps enchanting? When I started reading I felt that I was compeled to read as much as I could....I ended on chapter six by the way and I want to go on, but time is kinda an issue, college life can sometime get in the way. It's interesting, both our books deal with the same period (the 1860s), a fascinating era. I enjoyed your imaginative approach, though I did wonder whether the book shouldn't be set in nineteenth-century America rather than England, as the speech and attitudes seem to be more American than English. Perhaps the Earl of Dunfordshire could have taken a mansion in one of the southern states for the season? I was a bit confused by the dialogue as some of it sounded like it belonged to the period, but other parts seemed very modern, for example when Carly's maid says 'No, worries, miss', or tells her that there was 'oodles of room' in her dressing room. What beautiful surroundings you have put your leading lady in. She has so much to explore and get to know. This author has taken her time to word things beautifully and romantically with strong characters who have struggles that seem so real and believable. I'm ready for MORE of your style of writing. Can't get enough of this kind of romance filled with sensational romance, yet something I'd let my teenage daughter read too. I like that. It goes beyond romance to show self-control, something society lacks anymore. As much as Carly and Creighton want more from each other physically, they show restraint so that they respect each other. I am so in love with this story... cinematic and breathtakingly beautiful there is a charm within the characters and scenery which stroll away from the cliched Chick Flicks of today and reemerses the reader into a cinematic adventure within the heart. Elsie Weaver literally weaves a tapestry of love ensnared by the throws of passion, intregue and murder. I am proud to back your work and wish you continued success with the further adventures of Carly and Lord Huntingdon. writer-girl I don't know when I've ever read such an enchanting book. The characters just leap off the page. I know this isn't necessarily a Christmas book, but I find historical romance is especially delightful this time of year. But if you allow me, the narrative, despite its richness, is becoming a bit description heavy. I'm not too sure if you need to show her internal feelings in such overwhelming details. But Managed to devour it in a day and I have to tell you how much I enjoyed it. It is one of the best Historical Romances I have read on here. At times I did feel like the story was moving a bit to slowly and the pace could have been picked up a little to keep the reader hooked. But on the whole I can honestly say that it was a rip-roaring classic tale that had me immersed in the regency period. It reminded me of jane eyre and pride and prejudice, but with a twist . But I am looking forward to the next installment. You asked about the inclusion of the parts involving the gifts left on the treasure hunt. You probably could trim it back a bit. It was areas like that that I felt the story slowed down and you were just adding in details for the sake of it and it wasn't really adding anything to the story. I think just one or two gifts show the significance of shift in the relationship between father and son and conveys how much it means to the little boy. I had intended to comment earlier but at the end of each chapter I think, "I;ll just read one more." and then it gets too late. The Governess has a page-turning plot, engaging characters, wonderful descriptions and compelling writing. But what it has, more than anything else, is heart. It isn't just the romance between Carly and Creighton. It is the love Carly has for the children in her care, the love she has for her family and for her faith. This book gives a warm glow. I was a little intimidated by the title when I saw this was Volume I, but okay, I guessed if it was interesting, I would buy a book that long. And it is interesting. Carly is a good main character because of her spunkiness. The Earl of Dunfordshire may well have met his match. I’m not sure you should begin this in the rose garden; I felt it really began when Carly first arrived at the estate. Either way, it’s a good read. I’m adding this to my shelf. Wannabeawriter. Who Killed the President. PujaBorker This book takes you to a dreamland of true love, almost like a fairy-tale! The story and characters are very well-paced. As we read, our thoughts wander from one scene to the other, from one expression to the other, from one's heart-felt feelings to the other! I have read the first few chapters and and very eager to read the remaining chapters. If you have not discussed Lord Blackemore and Lady Gabrielle's love-story in detail in the later chapters, I would love to read about them too. Vol 3 perhaps! The initial interactions between Carly and Lord Huntington reminisce me about 'Anna and the King' for some reason. Love is beautiful and so is the love of The Governess. The writing is smooth and flows nicely, expertly done! Love this line! "Her nerves were on edge, creating mischief with her idle mind." I'm not sure about your spelling of "dewy." Tried to find it in an online dictionary but was unsuccessful. I work at a library and might be thinking of Dewey decimal system! LOL! It just gets better and better, the further I read. Love the descriptions of nature, the pond, prisms....birds...This is as good as any romance I've ever picked up! Absolutely gorgeous writing! If I were you, I'd go through and make sure I didn't have too many like minded sentences side-by-side. "Gripping now at the handkerchief..." followed by, "Blinking back tears for courage's sake..." followed by, "Reflecting upon her life...." I love the last sentence of the first chapter...made me click on chapter 2. Overall, reminds me so much of Phyllis Whitney, who I used to read many years ago. It's a return to the grand sweeping romances of the past. New romances are focused on sex. This has it all...sex, love, lust, plot...(plot is nice!) ...I could go on and on! And I will go on and on. There's just a taste of violence and horror which many writers forget has been a part of the genre since "Jane Eyre". I enjoyed reading this story. I have a few complaints about details which strike me as americanisms, which I'll cover in a letter, but by and large I consider this novel to be well crafted and full of wonderful emotional description. Even if the point of view vacillates wildly between characters within every chapter, I don't mind: I'm swept up in the drama. The writing is beautifully done and I was swept away into the past with Carly in the English countryside. My eyes are tired and I'll stop reading now but will continue again. There were however some things in language I thought I might point out to you. The setting is obviously Victorian but the writing is not. Sometimes we see Carly speaking as if her words and phrases were more twentieth century. While it does nothing to the story I do wonder if someone familiar and an expert in writings of the Victorian era might object to it. You might want to think of this. Oh, also there was this word "mantra" which I do not think they ever used quite the way we use it today. As I said I'm still reading this and will let you know if I come across any errors. It's quite an epic story so I feel that I have only scratched the surface of it and therefore difficult to provide a thorough comment. What I can say is that, the writing style transports the reader back in time and you can very easily picture the scenery and house in which Carly finds herself. You clearly get a sense of the household that Carly has joined and the mixed status that Carly's title but need for work place her in. It is also clear that Carly is trying to find her place in this society but that she has a feisty side to her nature which she can find difficult to control. That could certainly provide for some interesting clashes and there is a hint of that during her first encounter with the Earl. Floodo Only just started reading this and I love it. Your opening chapter drew me in and I immediately wanted to know more about Carly and the situation in which she finds herself. The subsequent chapters gradually reveal the circumstances behind her appointment, creating empathy with the character and contain charming descriptions of Huntingdon Manor, its owner and his interesting compliment of staff. There are some great hooks sprinkled in these early chapters, rumours of murder and women disappearing never to be seen again. I love historical novels and this one has all the hallmarks of a classic. I wish you the very best of luck with your series of books, you really deserve to do well. However I snuck a peak at chapter 37 as I was looking for some inspiration in writing a kiss (can't do it without making it sound so overdone), and was pointed towards your book. You also managed to avoid sounding repetitive, and kept the momentum going. In the first two chapters you have structured everything with great accuracy and skill, from introducing your characters, to describing Huntington Manor. I don't believe you could have improved on your descriptions in any way. Its simply written, and yet it with enough style to imply the historic time in which the book is set in, with comfortable smootth flowing sentances to enhance the readers experience. 'The Governess vol 1' is a six star rated historical romance. Its definitely a classic! I read the Prologue and Chapter 1. The style is easy, mannered enough to have a period feel to it without overdoing it and alienating a modern reader. Characters suit the genre; we already have a feisty young heroine, down on her luck but of impeccable pedigree, and a charismatic male character who might be hero or might be villain, but has been a challenge to ladies in the past and loved none of them. All this promises well for the sort of read that is like a big cup of hot chocolate in bed, with plenty of sugar in it. The switch of viewpoint at the end of the Prologue works very well and I love the ambiguity of 'And so alone' hinting at the attractive man having evil intentions. I was right there alongside Carly for the whole ride up to the estate. The prologue ended on a intriguing, almost sultry cliffhanger. Loved it! Here is one of many examples of where your writing shines. "Carly could hear the sound of his boots on the cobblestones crunching bits of sand beneath the soles of his feet." So vivid. You really have a knack for those descriptions! I could go on and on, but then i'd basically be repasting the entire chapter. I'd just like to make one suggestion. With regards to Carly's character, she's almost superhuman with regards to handling her difficult situation. I was wondering if you considered making her a bit more vulnerable. Right now, she posseses that wonderwoman quality that you may very well be going for, but i thought she might be more human if you wrote in a few lines about how she had struggled after her parents died or how sometimes she resented her situation? Just my suggestion, but I've only just finished the first chapter so i probablly shouldn;t be commenting on character other to say that I love her strength and determination. I can already tell she is a character we will love with much ease , and that this is a book I will enjoy. You pulled me in from the start. I loved reading this. Your imagery is well crafted and delivers precisely what it sets out to, giving an immersive experience without forcing the reader into it. I do feel some of the narrative, particularly in regards to character actions, is overly descriptive and some words and strings are repeated, which pushes the reader back out at times. It is very heavy on adjectives and adverbs too, though such an approach may well be expected in this genre. I was very impressed by your exposition delivery. It is tough to switch so seamlessly between modes but you pull it off effortlessly, giving satisfying answers that lead to more questions - precisely how to keep a reader interested. Clearly you understand exactly where and when to place such sections. Given your skill here I suspect that your character development as the book progresses will be of an equally high standard. So overall, I would say that your talent is quite clear. I would do some merciless cutting of the narrative in places but as I say this is not my genre and so such a suggestion may work against the norm. D M Sharples. Carly is a well drawn character and The extremes of her emotions, headstrong and bravery and fear and anxiety make her real and appealing. She also has really clear family values which is appropriate for her character and role as governess. Lord Creighton also has extremes of personality in that he is angry, forceful and aggressive but also torn, sad and longing. you cannot help but feel empathy for him as well as intrigue into his background and thought patterns. In the first few chapters there are several intimate scences between the two main characters which vary from steamy, sexual and intense and all without the two barely touching each other! you have managed to portray the chemistry between them well and also set up future scenes between the two. As a reader you are willing them to work through their relationship because they are both so likeable. By chapter five you are already creating much intrigue into the history of the manor house and the potential murders, corruption and schemes of the staff and nobles and the unexplained mysteries of this family. It makes you want to read on and I love the little snippets of the woman planning to come to the Manor house in order to capture Lord Creighton as their partner. My only constructive criticism is that chapter two was a bit slow (I've fixed this...) and I thought could be tightened a bit so the flow of the story continues, especially since it starts off so dramatic! Also, and I appreciate that I am coming from this as a non-Christian although also very liberal and accepting, but I found that there were a lot of references to praying. While this is an essential part of who Carly is and how she gets her strength, as someone who is alien to this practice I found myself skimming over a lot of these parts and by Chapter ten a little bit frustrated that of all the strengths in this woman, this is the one that she keeps coming back to. However, I thought that the scene where she meets the children late at night and encourages them to pray was lovely and moving. But I think that these moments would be more powerful if they happened less often. (I disagree.) Is this a Christian book? (YES!) if so then maybe the references are appropriate but if not then I would suggest drawing on Carlys other plentiful strengths to highlight her resourcefulness and strength, such as the love of her family or her privalidged upbringing. I have awarded five stars just because of the two main characters are their relationships and also the intrigue you have already created. Also, since I have a space on my bookshelf I have backed it and I will definitely be reading more in the future and hope you find these comments helpful. (I did!
