What people are saying about The Governess --

Mademoiselle Nobel
~The Governess~
Jane Eyre meets Pride & Prejudice!
Hot! Hot! Hot! Every word is like taking a bite out of
Belgian chocolate – delicious and addictive! The characters are endearing (especially the feisty Carly and mysterious Lord Huntington), the tone is
mellifluous and the imagery is vivid. Rich, aromatic writing! Here are a few of my favourite lines / descriptions so far:
‘Carly pulled a soft petal from the rose and smoothed it against her cheek,’ ‘...danced like prisms against the splashes.’

Carly is a cross between Jane Eyre and Elizabeth Bennett whilst Lord Huntington is a cross between Mr Rochester and Mr Darcy.

I would absolutely love to be able to buy this as an audio book, close my eyes and let my imagination wander!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Governess and have
highly-starred and watchilsted it (until I find space on my bookshelf)

A highly recommended read. Congratulations!

The Governess is an intense romance written in a
unique and somewhat classic style, which totally differentiates itself from the “lets hop in bed” type of romance novels of today. The romance is there, but
period details and deep characterization is more important to author Ellise C. Weaver.

In fact, it is this very strong attention to detail that will
thrill romance readers used to more slapdash or bodice-ripping tales. The storyline here and the way it’s told puts The Governess on the level of literary
fiction. Yet, somehow the author keeps things light and fun at the same time. It’s quite a skill, and readers will really love it.

All of the characters here are memorable, but especially Lady Carly Blakemore. She is sufficiently headstrong, which makes her standout in the period. In a lot of ways she reminded me of Fran Fine from The Nanny TV show, though a Victorian equivalent.

Not only would The Governess be well received by critics and readers, but it makes for a perfect beginning book in a series. Weaver states in the final chapter to stay tuned for more adventures from the characters that we have come to love, and I think this is true. I for one want to see more of their
stories, and written in this same style. A publisher who picks up volume one will be in for a treat, because they could pick up options on the other books as well, which I’m sure reader fans will be following.

Why this book isn’t already published, I don’t know! For the last three days I have been completely enraptured with the story of Carly and Lord Huntington. The writing is amazingly refined. There wasn’t one point where I found anything awkward about the story, or the way you wrote it. The slow build of their relationship, and the added mystery in the background was done perfectly. I already told you, but the children were also amazing! I thought the relationship between Carly and the two youngsters was such a lovely addition to the story, and really added an endearing quality to the book. Carly is an amazing character. I love her vulnerability and strength. There were times where I got so frustrated with her confused feelings towards Lord Huntington, but then I’d remember she is very young. It was perfect. I honestly don’t have
anything bad to say, which probably doesn’t help you lol but I can’t help it, I love it the way it is. I would definitely keep the part in the treasure hunt
with the gifts to Johnathon. I loved the way his character came out of his shell, and you saw how much he healed because of Carly. I can’t wait for the
second! When will it be ready? Congrats on such a wonderful story, and best of luck with it in the future.
All the best,
Janelle

This is a modern classic :)  I'm on chapter 63  and... oh things are tense! :) I was surprised by the quality of writing...  it isn't rushed and sloppy like so much of today's writing. Thank you for taking me away from my daily troubles for just a little bit and doing so in a
way that only makes me want more of that world without any guilt! I feel good about letting my teenage girl read this, and know it will entertain and offer more thought provoking material than some of the today's reads and literary heroines. You wrote a classic heroine for us, a thing that has not been done well for ages. Thank you!! And I hope the world discovered The Governess, and the writer behind the amazing story... :)

Love, love, love, love, love, did I say love enough? Probably not, but I must say Ellise that is something that I was not expecting. I have read the romances of today and honestly they have all been rather boring. But your's is something so much more...oh how to describe it...lovely, perhaps enchanting? When I started reading I felt that I was compeled to read as much as I could....I ended on chapter six by the way and I want to go on, but time is kinda an issue, college life can sometime get in the way. But back to the matter at hand, I love this. Your writing is so elegant and when reading your work I am pulled right in. I'm sure that you're gonna be one of those top sellers that has girls fighting to the death at the book store for the last copy of The Governess. When I have more time I'm definatly gonna finish
reading cuz it is just that good. Totally gonna six star rate this.

You are a fantastic writer and that's all I can say.

Hi Ellise, so pleased to hear you have gor your medal - CONGRATULATIONS. you have put me in a bit of a quandary though as I now have a space on my shelf to fill! Seriously though I am thrilled for you and wish you every success. If you can, would you be kind enough to read some of my

Hi. I'm glad to be able to have the time to read some of this at last.  And what a read!  I must confess I find it difficult to concentrate on a computer screen for too long so I am hoping that one day I will see this on the bookshelf of my local Waterstones in the UK.  You have a glorious way with words which is instantly very readable and evokes a by gone era.  Well done and good luck to you!

Well, I can tell why this is number one!  This is a good one.  GOod luck with being published.

Hi Ellise,

Let me just start by saying I absolutely LOVED The Governess!!! I started reading the first chapter last night around 6pm and read the whole book in one go- absolutely could not put it down!!

I was so tired, but so addicted to the story of Carly and Lord Huntington. He is my ideal type of man, strong, wealthy, a tad moody and mysterious and impossibly handsome hahaha!! And Carly seems so sweet, yet strong and determined.

I would really love to read the chapters in between,
because i can't stop thinking of it. Yes, your book is one of those which lingers in the mind long after you've stopped reading.

No wonder it's rated number one. Your descriptions are beautifully written without being too long and drawn out.

I can't say enough. Truly Brilliant!

I was hooked from the very beginning. This is just the type of book I love and it felt as if I was reading a proper published book. Your descriptive abilities are excellent and your plot, characters and dialogue fit in beautifully with the time period. Good research done here, I wish you all the very best with it :)

can't wait to read the next chapter just given it a well deserved rating and it can rest on my bookshelf before it flies into the bookstores

wow I can't believe I waited to read this book As its one of my favourite genres. really loved the characters, the dialogue between  lady Caroline and the Earl kept  me hooked. I would proudly put this on my home bookshelf next to the Jane Austens and Bronte sisters.

I love your vivid style of writing! I can see the world and can almost touch the characters they seem so life-like! The prologue is the best I have read on the site so far and firmly believe there is success for this novel in the published world. Not much I can say, because there is hardly anything wrong with it besides the few grammatical errors (well it shows
you're human).

Good luck and high stars!

hi, had this on my bookshelf for a while, and thought i'd take a quick read.  It's not my usual genre, but I still found it quite easy to read and enjoyable.  It's very Victoria Holt, with a good sense of history and romance. Hope you do well with it, and thanks for the opportunity to read.

Three cheers for the perfect pacing and restraint
of this romance !  it is opening as slowly and subtly as a rose bud. And how refreshing to have a glimpse into the thoughts of the baffling Lord Huntingdon,
As readers we are privileged to have these insights - Carly can only guess what turbulent emotions are troubling that manly chest. What awaits a young girl,
even one as strong-minded  as the indomitable Carly, in this house of indefinable menace?. I look forward to finding out before too long. I have but two suggestions - one, it is slightly dispiriting to know from the outset that this is only the first volume of Carly's story, and that even when we reach the end of the book, it is not the end. Why not call irt simply  'The Governess'? Secondly, beware of small Americanisms such as 'off limits' [out of bounds],
'Land sakes!'  and did I notice one Australian 'No worries' - not even sure if Australia had been colonized at this time? Thank you for a most diverting read -
yours, Pan.

Althought at first i was a lil skeptical as to wheather i could really get into this genrie. I was actually surprised at the smooth methodical flow of your book. I can see this flying off the stores bookshelves in the very near future. The cover kind of threw me off and I assumed it would be a boring read. But boy was I wrong.

Eileen Kardos
Seething emotions burst onto the page straightaway, establishing an unmistakable atmosphere.  Will our herione’s sensitivities, her vulnerability, her social disadvantages and her all too trusting character survive a heartless environment, and a dangerously tempting man?  This author knows her genre all right!  Well done, and best wishes to you.

The Governess is really a wonderful book, and I am so addicted to this. I thought at one point, this book can be a published book. And why is that it isn't published? I only read Prologue/chapter 1, 22, and 37 (which I know by the way is your favorites). ;) All I have is good things about your book. :D As what Mademoiselle Nobel said, its like Pride and
Prejudice and Jane Eyre mixed. I love the Victorian ages, so I am already your huge fan of this series. :) I really like Carly and Lord Huntington. They are
vivid and lively, their characters. Everything looks excellent in terms of mechanical issues, plot, and story flow. I really hope that this book will become published. I will be happy for you when it does. I am going to put this book on my bookshelf, that is how good it is to me. I also wish you luck for this book to be published! :)

AuroraNemesis
Carly comes across very quickly as a strong  protagonist. Very strong plot, with a nice touch of romance and intrigue. A fast pace with many dips and turns. Well edited and well written, you grasp the need of your market well. The ends of the chapters leave you with a good hook that dips into fresh delights in the following chapters.
A very good read and well done

JMTE23
This really brings me back to the Jayne Eyre days
... feels more of a love story than Jayne Eyre (more about self empowerment) but so far i like it ...It also reminds  me of The Crimson Petal and the White
...just cleaner and with more emphasis on the love part.

I have read the first two chapters of your book and I am totally enthralled with your amazing descriptive style and enchanting character protrayal. I find the writing and story to be charming and utterly captivating.   I plan to continue and give this book 6 stars and will be placing on my bookshelf.  Good luck on your authentic work. I'm sorry for taking so long to get to your book, even though the stunning book cover caught my eye from the start. It's interesting, both our books deal with the same period (the 1860s), a fascinating era. I enjoyed your imaginative approach, though I did wonder whether the book shouldn't be set in nineteenth-century America rather than England, as the speech and attitudes seem to be more American than English. Perhaps the Earl of Dunfordshire could have taken a mansion in one of the southern states for the season?

I was a bit confused by the dialogue as some of it sounded like it belonged to the period, but other parts seemed  very modern, for example when
Carly's maid says 'No, worries, miss', or tells her that there was 'oodles of room' in her dressing room.

But its a cracking story, and I wish you the best with it,

Rosemary

Hi Ellise,
I have to say that one of my favorite characters along with Lady Blakemore, is Millisent.  What beautiful surroundings you have put your leading lady in.  She has so much to explore and get to know.  The missing young ladies that Millisent told her about though makes way for a 'trouble-in-paradise' situation.

You have a wonderful gift for eloquent description and Carly, as you have written her, is so engaging
and likable.  One would think that she has led a charmed life, but I'm sure there is something in store for her, that will test her mettle.

Congratulations on a fine novel Ellise!

LOVING this story.  I love the two lead characters and can't wait to read the rest of the story.

Wow Ellise, what a wonderful book! I wouldn't
typically read a romance novel, but Carly captured my interest at once and i just couldn't stop reading! This is a thoroughly enchanting book which has all
the key elements of a great read: lovable characters, romance and mystery. Lord Huntington's children are fabulous and i love Lady Elizabeth! The only
points i will make are that it would have been nice to see a little bit more mystery woven into the book during the middle chapters as at times it was only
the characters that kept me going. Also, when i read the scenes where Susanna and Lord Carter began to fall for each other, it did feel as though i was
reliving earlier chapters where Carly and Lord Huntington were realising their feelings for one another so maybe you could try varying the description a bit?

Apart from that, this is a brilliant book and i loved every minute of reading it! backed with pleasure, Amy

Seasons of Life
I have thoroughly enjoyed the escape to the
Victorian world this story gives me.  I love romance, but I also love more to the story.  This author has taken her time to word things beautifully and
romantically with strong characters who have struggles that seem so real and believable.  I won't give away the ending because it is so good, but I'm
thrilled that there are sequels to this family saga.  I can't wait to read them!   When are you going to release them Ellise?  I'm ready for MORE of your style of writing.

Can't get enough of this kind of romance filled with
sensational romance, yet something I'd let my teenage daughter read too.  I like that.  If I had this in hardback or paperback, I wouldn't have to worry about leaving my book around the house and who will read it.  It goes beyond romance to show self-control, something society lacks anymore.  As much as Carly and Creighton want more from each other physically, they show restraint so that they respect each other.

Lord Huntington is the ultimate chivilrous
gentleman.  LOVE HIM!  What woman wouldn't after being shown how passionate they feel but protect her completely, even from oneself.  I've six-star rated your book, Ellise, and have had it on my shelf from day one on here.  I would love to have all your books in my hot little hands to read and re-read at my convenience.

This is really well written. Not normally the kind of book I would pick up, but I am going to keep it on my watchlist until I have more of a chance to delve into it. Bravo! I usually read contemporary books but the writing here seems fresh, even though the subject matter is classic in nature. Good job, Caitlin Avery

Enjoying this book. Just my kind of read. I love the period, and the way it's written, sucked me right in. Characters are strong and reliably deliver mystery and suspense as well as the provocative romance.
Well-done, Elise. Good luck with this and hope to see if published soon so I can add it to my real-life bookshelf. My home library will always grow with this
kind of story. Look forward to your sequels (btw, when will they come out?).

In today's world of "get to the point" writing it is nice to see writer's that still enjoy using language to entertain the reader, as well as a good story with strong characters. I am not much for this genre, but I am up to the quality of writing and storytelling demonstrated here. Thank you for bringing the language back into writing.

I may have to agree that you could leave out a
portion of the treasure hunt, although I liked it and I think the relationship with the kids is fantastic! I have to admit that I was more than ready to get back to the back & forth between Carly & Lord Huntington
before the treasure hunt was finished. I read all 65 chapters and thoroughly enjoyed each one of them! Great Job and Good Luck!!

My girlfriend would probably like this (not an insult - she has great taste in books!) - it's not my sort of thing but I had to see how it had got into the top 5.

I am so in love with this story... cinematic and
breathtakingly beautiful there is a charm within the characters and scenery which stroll away from the cliched Chick Flicks of today and reemerses the
reader into a cinematic adventure within the heart. Elsie Weaver literally weaves a tapestry of love ensnared by the throws of passion, intregue and
murder. I am proud to back your work and wish you continued success with the further adventures of Carly and Lord Huntingdon.

I don't know when I've ever read such an
enchanting book. The characters just leap off the page. I know this isn't necessarily a Christmas book, but I find historical romance is especially delightful this time of year. Carly is just the perfect heroine and I'm so glad I've read this book. I wish you the best of luck with this. ~Ann

whitechief
Your prose is absolutely enchanting. But if you allow me, the narrative, despite its richness, is becoming a bit description heavy. I'm not too sure if you need to show her internal feelings in such overwhelming details. Now that's just one opinion, which is not the best.  Nevertheless, I'm enjoying your style thoroughly, since it reminds me of the old masters.
Cheers.

Elise, I wanted to let you know I really enjoyed your story and would like to read your sequels some day if you ever do put them up here on authonomy. I have star rated and WLed the Governess. To be honest, this really reminded me of the movie, Sound of Music. You have created an unforgettable modern classic with intense, amazing characters. I <3 it  :)

My only advice though is that I think you should minimize the treasure hunt, as I read the chaps I noticed you kind of over do the exclamatory
sentences and (please take no offense) that there are some small, I feel unnecessary sections that only procrastinate the plot- might even bore the
reader.

But anyways, thumbs up Elise!

I don't read this genre but it is obvious that this is good and more than publishable. I don't mean to sound mean, especially since my own writing is not any better, but this novel, even from the first page
stands out among the others I have read so far from this site in a big way. I have a novella which is soon to be released by a small publisher in Toronto, but
I am quite certain this author will surpass my slow starting career almost immediately  once she is published. If she doesn't have an agent yet, the
literary world must be broken in some way.

My goodness! You had me hooked from the first

Hi Elise
I finally managed to clear some time to sit down and read the full book (which is a first for me on Authonomy, I don't usually read full manuscripts on here.) But  Managed to devour it in a day and I have to tell you how much I enjoyed it.  It is one of the best Historical Romances I have read on here.  At times I did feel like the story was moving a bit to slowly and the pace could have been picked up a little to keep the reader hooked.   But on the whole I can honestly say that it was a rip-roaring classic
tale that had me immersed in the regency period.  It reminded me of jane eyre and pride and prejudice, but with a twist .  But I am looking forward to the
next installment.

You asked about the inclusion of the parts involving
the gifts left on the treasure hunt.  You probably could trim it back a bit.  It was areas like that that I felt the story slowed down and you were just adding
in details for the sake of it and it wasn't really adding anything to the story.   I think just one or two gifts show the significance of shift in the relationship between father and son and conveys how much it means to the little boy.

I wish you all the best in your literary endeavors.

Sara :)

I am up to Chapter 22 of The Governess. I had
intended to comment earlier but at the end of each chapter I think, "I;ll just  read one more." and then it gets too late. The Governess has a page-turning
plot, engaging characters, wonderful descriptions and compelling writing. But what it has, more than anything else, is heart. It isn't just the romance
between Carly and Creighton. It is the love Carly has for the children in her care, the love she has for her family and for her faith. This book gives a warm
glow. I have already had it on my shelf for some time and given it the highest possible stars.

THE GOVERNESS
This is an interesting period piece. I was a little intimidated by the title when I saw this was Volume I, but okay, I guessed if it was interesting, I would buy a book that long. And it is interesting. Carly is a good main character because of her spunkiness. The Earl
of Dunfordshire may well have met his match. I’m not sure you should begin this in the rose garden; I felt it really began when Carly first arrived at the
estate. Either way, it’s a good read. I’m adding this to my shelf.

This book takes you to a dreamland of true love,
almost like a fairy-tale! The story and characters are very well-paced. As we read, our thoughts wander from one scene to the other, from one expression to
the other, from one's heart-felt feelings to the other! I have read the first few chapters and and very eager to read the remaining chapters. If you have not
discussed Lord Blackemore and Lady Gabrielle's love-story in detail in the later chapters, I would love to read about them too. Vol 3 perhaps! The initial
interactions between Carly and Lord Huntington reminisce me about 'Anna and the King' for some reason.  Love is beautiful and so is the love of The Governess. I have given it a six star rating and wish you all the best.

Great characterisation, and the writing has good
pace and a smooth flow to carry the story along.

Even if the plot wouldn't have as amazing as it is, I probably would have still kept reading because the way you write is so lovely. It really draws you in, and suddenly I am feeling all the same things as your character. I was also happy to find that this book isn't going to be your typical romance novel. Look forward to reviewing again once I get deeper into
the story.

Historical fiction at its best. Well done. This deserves to be on a shop shelf one day.

The prologue has too many sentences back to back,
in the same style.  Just my opinion but I think your writing is at it's best when you excitedly tell the story without so many descriptive words.  When the first chapter starts, I don't feel this anymore.  The writing is smooth and flows nicely, expertly done! Love this line!  "Her nerves were on edge, creating mischief with her idle mind."

I'm not sure about your spelling of "dewy."  Tried to find it in an online dictionary but was unsuccessful.  I
work at a library and might be thinking of Dewey decimal system!  LOL!  It just gets better and better, the further I read.   Love the descriptions of nature, the pond, prisms....birds...This is as good as any romance I've ever picked up!  Absolutely gorgeous writing! If I were you, I'd go through and make sure I didn't have too many like minded sentences side-by-side.  "Gripping now at the handkerchief..."  followed by, "Blinking back tears for courage's sake..."  followed by, "Reflecting upon her life...."  I love the
last sentence of the first chapter...made me click on chapter 2.
Overall,  reminds me so much of Phyllis Whitney, who I used to read many years ago.  It's a return to the grand sweeping romances of the past.  New romances are focused on sex.  This has it all...sex, love, lust, plot...(plot is nice!) ...I could go on and on!
And I will go on and on.  I intend to read more.  I give you high stars and when I get one free, I'll place you on my bookshelf.

Because you've paid attention to the old social
barriers that were so very palpable in Nineteenth Century England, you've been able to infuse your story with the tension so necessary to Romance.  There's just a taste of violence and horror which many writers forget has been a part of the genre since "Jane Eyre".  I enjoyed reading this story.

I have a few complaints about details which strike me as americanisms, which I'll cover in a letter, but by and large I consider this novel to be well crafted and full of wonderful emotional description.  Even if the point of view vacillates wildly between characters within every chapter, I don't mind: I'm swept up in the drama.

Felix_Din
I loved your prologue and first chapter so I backed your book and gave it all stars. Best wishes!

Dear Ellise,
Wow, 182,000 words?  Quite a heafty novel.  I just started to read this one so I have no quite finished
reading all 65 chapters just yet.  I am only up to chapter two, but I felt compelled to write a note and let you know how wonderful I think this is.  The
writing is beautifully done and I was swept away into the past with Carly in the English countryside.  You managed to create an incredibly intricate dynamic
between Carly and Lord Huntington in only one chapter, evidence of an ingenious writer.  I loved it.  I will be reading more soon.  You have six stars from
me.

For a guys who's not into romance period, but
because you're family, I've read this with my wife and I must say I was impressed and proud of your writing! We had some good discussions about your
approach from the man's perspective and I have to admit you captured the man's side of it very well. It held my attention and had some very good and creative action scenes that we men love. The romantic parts, which were many, captured a
mans frustrations with naive women and you caught the emotions that come from someone betrayed and non-trusting. So over all a good solid story with many levels of enjoyment and one a couple could read together without all the smut and nonsense. Teenagers could read this too and learn some valuable lessons without the fears that it was adult marital. I wouldn't have to worry about what they were reading. Good job Ellise!

I'm back, I know I have already referred to my love of your story, but.... I love, love, love, love, love, love, (I'd be typing love for the next few hours if I had the time, but to shorten it) love, love, love, love this. I just finished chapter ten and oh my gosh, this just
keeps getting better and better. I regret not being able to read more sooner. This story has captured my attention and it keeps beckoning me to read even more. I'm so glad you have it all up here. You are amazing, your story is amazing, and now my question stands....Why aren't you published yet?

If I could star this again i totally would. One my scale you have gone through the roof with this work. Can't wait ta read more,

Ellise,
I thoroughly enjoyed the first three chapters of the Governess.  Like the opulent surroundings of Huntington Manor, your writing is just as exquisite and refined.  You immediately put the reader on edge.  Is Lord Huntington is a monster or will he seek love and companionship with the beautiful, young governess?  By chapter three you have me
hooked!  I was glad to see you use a prologue and that your book is long.  I also use a prologue and my word count is above the desirable 80k at 120.  I will
be back to read some of your favorite chapters and will eventually give your book some space on my shelf.  Six stars!

Hello Ellise:
Your writing, through the medium of well-chosen words and wonderfully flowing sentences, creates a
beautiful painting. Admittedly, this is not the type of genre which I would normally read, but your gifting is nonetheless obvious. Much love and care has
obviously gone into this novel.

Blessings to you and may you find wonderful success in publication.

Sandy Emerson
Okay so now I'm at Chapter Three.
Gosh I'm loving the character development and Lord Huntingdon.  Carly is so spirited.  I really like that.  I also like the mystery you've introduced.  It's keeping me interested.

One thing I have to say though is I wonder at some of your word choice.  Some of it fits in that era perfectly but some of it's modern for the age - like spunky and subject.  It kind of throws me a little.  I think more of 'spirited' or 'matter' when I think of that time period.  It's a small thing, but I just had to mention it.

Continues reading.

Sandy Emerson
I've read the first chapter and I just wanted to
make this comment to let you know I'm reading it.

The descriptions were the first thing that took my breath away.  You have such a lovely way of writing
and your word choice is exceptional.  I felt like I was reading a published novel.  The background story of Carly's parents was really nice, such a tame word, but it set the tone for the story and how Carly came to be a governess.  The dialogue, from what I can see of it was good too.

Only a small comment at this stage.  I'll continue to read and I'll rate it when I get more of a feel for the story.

desiree lane
I am really enjoying this book. It is reminiscent
of a time that modern culture has since duplicated by replacing modern conveniences with the age old subtlety of chivalry.

This book is easy to read and one that you lose
yourself in.  The writing is wonderful and the story line is keeps you turning the pages.  Great job!

You are a wonderful writer! I can't stop reading this. It is truly interesting not at all like any other love story I have read. I thought when I picked it up it would be just another Barbra Cartland (spelling?) type of novel but was pleasantly surprised from the moment it started that it wasn't. I am glad I decided to read and thank you for suggesting I do. You made my day. I've read 18 chapters and couldn't find anything to complain of. My eyes are tired and I'll stop reading now but will continue again. There were however some things in language I thought I might point out to you. The setting is obviously Victorian but the writing is not. Sometimes we see Carly speaking as if her words and phrases were more twentieth century. While it does nothing to the story I do wonder if someone familiar and an expert in
writings of the Victorian era might object to it. You might want to think of this. Oh, also there was this word "mantra" which I do not think they ever used
quite the way we use it today. As I said I'm still reading this and will let you know if I come across any errors.

I'm giving you 6 stars and wish you the best.

Hi Ellise,
I read the first two chapters.  I am not always the biggest fan of historical romance from modern-day
writers because it can seem forced and stilted. I didn't have that feeling at all while reading The Governess - it flows beautifully.

I've read through your prologue and find it very well written and captivating.  So much so, that I will definitely be back to read on. I've placed your book on my shelf.

Dear Ellise, I read the prologue and Chapter 1 and enjoyed them immensely. Exceptionally well written,
breathtaking descriptions pull me into the story in no time. Carly is such a vivid character I want to know more about her. Your writing is filled with strong emotions - you wrote The Governess with passion, which makes me believe into your story. Quite an impressive piece of writing - I wish you the best of
luck with getting to the desk next month. Your book deserves to win.

Kindest regards,

I finally got round to making a start on The
Governess. It's quite an epic story so I feel that I have only scratched the surface of it and therefore difficult to provide a thorough comment. What I can
say is that, the writing style transports the reader back in time and you can very easily picture the scenery and house in which Carly finds herself.  You
clearly get a sense of the household that Carly has joined and the mixed status that Carly's title but need for work place her in. It is also clear that Carly
is trying to find her place in this society but that she has a feisty side to her nature which she can find difficult to control. That could certainly provide for some interesting clashes and there is a hint of that
during her first encounter with the Earl.

Only just started reading this and I love it.  First - it's style is so appropriate for the genre and historical novels are my fave.

Absolutely beautiful woven tapestry of romance, the intrigue of love, pride and everything in between.  Durable, rational and people-true saga, hand crafted with a sensitive, effective and highly skilled hand! The scenes are historically resplendent with intrigue and you can almost smell the fragrance of the times, as you masterfully present such an unforgettable and stirring descriptions of the players and the imbalance and unjust class warfare of the age. The protagonist and it's opposite number, along with each member of the cast, brimming with spice, vinegar and nobility, all are well developed and flow in a cacophony of ethical, moral and social interaction that truly paints a masterpiece with words! Really outstanding work Ellise!  Absolutely wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is not your typical romance...and that's more than refreshing and why I love it!!!! I've 6 starred it and backed it fully. It's inventive, fresh, full of adventure and a murder mystery to boot, great characters and story line, clean yet evocative and sensual, and most importantly, very well written! More of these types of well rounded clean romance novels need to be done. Well executed  Ellise. Looking forward to all the sequels too!

May you get the attention and publishing you need soon.

Oh it has been too long since I last came over here and had a peek at your work! So glad I came back for this novel. It is like an escape. So well done, it just needs to be published. I have no critiques to

looking forward to reading your review on the ED!

I loved this book! It was so nice to read something "normal" that didn't have vampires, wizards or any kind of world within a world scenario.  I also love the relationships between the children and Carly. It's so sweet and tender and made me cry at times.  Definitely a must read.

Very well written none the less, I applaud your style.

I've mentioned before how fast I would run out of
the room if somebody threatened to make me read a book such as yours. But it is giving me such pleasure to see your beautiful cover racing up the charts that I couldn't stop myself and took a few random peeks at your text.

I do not know the conventions for books such as this so I cannot comment on chapter length and so on, and, surly of me I know, but I could not read enough to study your plot. However, I can happily say with no compunction at all that your language does this site proud. It is perfectly toned for its supposed time
period yet does not fall prey to faux historical style. I am quite sure its target audience will love it.

And you are going to have to buy your sister a slap-up meal or something for designing that arresting
cover.

You have a winner here Ellise.

As promised I've been reading your book over the weekend and can only describe your writing style as beautiful.  Your opening chapter drew me in and I immediately wanted to know more about Carly and the situation in which she finds herself.

The subsequent chapters gradually reveal the circumstances behind her appointment, creating
empathy with the character and contain charming descriptions of Huntingdon Manor, its owner and his interesting compliment of staff. There are some great hooks sprinkled in these early chapters, rumours of murder and women disappearing never to be seen again.

I love historical novels and this one has all the hallmarks of a classic.

I wish you the very best of luck with your series of books, you really deserve to do well.

Okay, first off I don't read this genre usually.
However I snuck a peak at chapter 37 as I was looking for some inspiration in writing a kiss (can't do it without making it sound so overdone), and was
pointed towards your book.

I must say, I picked a good example to look at! I liked how you managed to convey the emotions between both characters without going overboard, and got enough physical description in as well. You
also managed to avoid sounding repetitive, and kept the momentum going.

So this probably doesn't help you in any way, but I quite like the scene :)

sandy-1
I get a wonderful feeling while reading this book. It reminds me of  the all-time classic Jane Eyre.
In the first two chapters you have structured everything with great accuracy and skill, from
introducing your characters, to describing Huntington Manor. I don't believe you could have improved on your descriptions in any way.
Its simply written, and yet it with enough style to imply the historic time in which the book is set in,
with comfortable smootth flowing sentances to enhance the readers experience.
'The Governess vol 1' is a six star rated historical romance. Its definitely a classic!

I'm sorry it took so long to get back to your book, but I have again put you on my shelf. You write beautifully, your descriptions are out of this world. The writing flows well. The story is intriguing. Don't give in to the no sex idea but stand on your beliefs as a christian. If nothing else, it will definitely sell in the christian genre and that is a big community of readers in itself! Girl, you got what it takes. Not only should you be published but I believe you could be number one. A publisher should grab you up and work with you because you are a hidden gem. I really mean that. Good luck on making the top five. Oh, by the way, please put me on your list of autographed books when you finally get there and you will get there, don't give up.  Blessings               Ailene

A romantic story with an engaging heroine in the
tradition of Jane Eyre. I love the Victorian era so this is definitly my cup of tea.. Some lovely descriptive passages, though perhaps the sentences just a
little long, but the story flows well. I would like a little  more background on Carly, but otherwise it is very good. Backed with stars and on w/l.

Checked out the first few chapters and appreciated the transition between character dialogue and the rest of the story.  Many writers struggle to balance the words and thoughts of their main characters with supporting details, the overall story, and the supporting content, but you have done this quite well. I look forward to reading more in the future!

I must say, having made it to Chapter 42 now, I am (obviously) enjoying this story.  It's a must for any lover of historical romance and, of course, has a very gothic vibe.  I love the elements of intrigue you have mixed in.  I plan on reading further and am also interested in any subsequent volumes.

Hi Ellise,
I like how your writing fits the period.  It flows well and adds a fresh look at 19th century cultures and
lifestyles.  You have created a believable set of characters whose relationships interweave creatively as they move throughout the story.

You have added modern twists, like a strong female protagonist with a modern name, to make your story unique for the time period.  Well done!

Many stars headed your way.
Best of luck!

This isn't the kind of genre I read usually, and I've just read the opening but I'm quite enjoying it! I like the heroine. She has this airy, romantic positivity and I like the way you show her character rather than tell it to us. She keeps one rose petal and discards the rest, it shows us that she is romantic and perhaps a little spoiled, that she remains in her own world and neglects the rest of it.

Very well written. Good luck with it!

I can't imagine the planning this novel must have
taken you.  This type of sweeping saga makes me wish I had several free days to put my feet up and plunge into the world you've created.  As for the writing itself, impeccable.  I found maybe a word here or there that I would delete or change but honestly, I loved the old-fashioned, patient style you've employed (thought of Austen, Bronte, etc.), and I think the most masterful thing you've done is that I felt immersed in the time immediately.  I think it must be very difficult to make the reader feel that they are truly in another historical period, and I did from the start.  Flesh and blood characters, excellent writing and from the pitch, a plot that sounds both intriguing and exciting...really, I can't think of anything missing.  I sympathize with you, trying to find someone to back a book of this length, written in this way, but I truly hope you find a way.

The pitch is perfect because it makes it clear what sort of book this is, so DON'T read this book if you don't believe in incredible kisses and romantic fiction that delivers exactly what you expect of it. I read the Prologue and Chapter 1.

The style is easy, mannered enough to have a period feel to it without overdoing it and alienating a modern reader. Characters suit the genre; we already have a feisty young heroine, down on her
luck but of impeccable pedigree, and a charismatic male character who might be hero or might be villain, but has been a challenge to ladies in the past and loved none of them. All this promises well for the sort of read that is like a big cup of hot chocolate in bed, with plenty of sugar in it.

The switch of viewpoint at the end of the Prologue works very well and I love the ambiguity of 'And so alone' hinting at the attractive man having evil
intentions.

Ellise,
I loved reading your Prologue and Chapter 1.  Your strong suit lies in your superb detailing.  I was right there alongside Carly for the whole ride up to the estate.  The prologue ended on a intriguing, almost sultry cliffhanger.  Loved it!

Here is one of many examples of where your writing shines.   "Carly could hear the sound of his boots on the cobblestones crunching bits of sand beneath the soles of his feet."  So vivid.  You really have a knack for those descriptions!  I could go on and on, but then i'd basically be repasting the entire chapter.

I'd just like to make one suggestion.  With regards to Carly's character, she's almost superhuman with regards to handling her difficult situation.  I was wondering if you considered making her a bit more vulnerable.  Right now, she posseses that
wonderwoman quality that you may very well be going for, but i thought she might be more human if you wrote in a few lines about how she had struggled after her parents died or how sometimes she resented her situation?   Just my suggestion,
but I've only just finished the first chapter so i probablly shouldn;t be commenting on character other to say that I love her strength and determination.

I can already tell she is a character we will love with much ease , and that this is a book I will enjoy.  You pulled me in from the start.

I loved reading this.   I'm so happy I had a chance to spend my morning with The Governess.  I'll write back after I've read more.

Best,
Nicole

I'm not a romance or historical fiction reader so I won't comment on story or pace as I wouldn't know if it fit what it is supposed to look like. The voice of the piece is nice. Measured while giving Carly her own innocence and enthusiasm. The imagery is vivid and not overdone, which I like personally.

I came to this book after receiving a friend request (my first, I am brand new here) from you and have read the first two chapters. I must point out here that this kind of book is really not my cup of tea, so I will make no comments on the actual content and nature of the story, instead offering my thoughts on your specific writing skills.

Your imagery is well crafted and delivers precisely what it sets out to, giving an immersive experience without forcing the reader into it. I do feel some of the narrative, particularly in regards to character actions, is overly descriptive and some words and strings are repeated, which pushes the reader back out at times. It is very heavy on adjectives and adverbs too, though such an approach may well be expected in this genre.

I was very impressed by your exposition delivery. It is tough to switch so seamlessly between modes but you pull it off effortlessly, giving satisfying answers that lead to more questions - precisely how to keep a reader interested. Clearly you understand exactly
where and when to place such sections. Given your skill here I suspect that your character development as the book progresses will be of an equally high
standard.

So overall, I would say that your talent is quite clear. I would do some merciless cutting of the narrative in places but as I say this is not my genre and so such a suggestion may work against the norm.

Hi Ellise,
Love it, love it, love it!  And what great detail too - I know, because my novel is set in a similar environment in 1860 as well (although I've contrasted it with a modern woman's story too,
which wasn't easy)

Anyway, I'll be back to comment more but well done
and keep going. Great stuff.

Best wishes,

I have got to chapter 10 and will certainly be reading some more but thought I stopped in a good place to review and comment.

Carly is a well drawn character and The extremes of her emotions, headstrong and bravery and fear and anxiety make her real and appealing. She also has really clear family values which is appropriate for her
character and role as governess.

Lord Creighton also has extremes of personality in that he is angry, forceful and aggressive but also torn, sad and longing. you cannot help but feel empathy for him as well as intrigue into his  background and thought patterns.

In the first few chapters there are several intimate scences between the two main characters which vary from steamy, sexual and intense and all without the two barely touching each other! you have
managed to portray the chemistry between them well and also set up future scenes between the two. As a reader you are willing them to work through their relationship because they are both so likeable.

By chapter five you are already creating much intrigue into the history of the manor house and the
potential murders, corruption and schemes of the staff and nobles and the unexplained mysteries of this family. It makes you want to read on and I love
the little snippets of the woman planning to come to the Manor house in order to capture Lord Creighton as their partner.

My only constructive criticism is that chapter two was a bit slow (I've fixed this...) and I thought could be tightened a bit so the flow of the story continues, especially since it starts off so dramatic!

Also, and I appreciate that I am coming from this as a non-Christian although also very liberal and accepting, but I found that there were a lot of references to praying. While this is an essential part of who Carly is and how she gets her strength, as someone who is alien to this practice I found myself skimming over a lot of these parts and by Chapter ten a little bit frustrated that of all the strengths in this woman, this is the one that she keeps coming back to. However, I thought that the scene where she meets the children late at night and encourages them to pray was lovely and moving. But I think that these moments would be more powerful if they happened less often. (I disagree.)

Is this a Christian book? (YES!)  if so then maybe the references are appropriate but if not then I would suggest drawing on Carlys other plentiful strengths to highlight her resourcefulness and strength, such as the love of her family or her privalidged upbringing.

I have awarded five stars just because of the two main characters are their relationships and also the intrigue you have already created. Also, since I have a space on my bookshelf I have backed it and I will definitely be reading more in the future and hope you find these comments helpful.  (I did!  Thanks!)

best of luck

Chapter 22 took my breath away, the build up was
so tense that I found myself saying "Just kiss her for God's sake." Brilliantly written and I can't wait to read more. You just seem so at home with the time
about which you write and that really comes across. I don't like that Mr Stone but then you're not supposed to. I hope Carly tells Creighton about his behaviour and Creighton sorts him out.

Ellise,
Although I have only read a few chapters so far, I wanted to express how much I am enjoying your story! I have never been much of a fan of traditional literary fiction (reminds me too much of the required reading in school), but your story is delightful and I am already drawn in by your characters and the mystique of the back story. I will rate once I've finished, but I couldn't wait to share my first impressions.

Take care,

A beautiful piece. You have such a gift for story-telling! Your narrative voice is highly engaging, and your descriptive imagery is so lovely to read. Giving you high stars and finding space on my shelf soon!
